Crane Cabin Fire on Pipelayer Deep Energy: A Critical Safety Briefing

What Happened: On December 1, 2024, at approximately 0352, the pipelayer Deep Energy was undergoing a maintenance period while docked at the Millard Maritime facility in Theodore, Alabama. A fire ignited within one of the vessel’s three crane cabins. The crew initiated firefighting efforts, and the local fire department was contacted, subsequently extinguishing the blaze. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, the crane cabin sustained significant fire damage, with estimated costs reaching $1.8 million. The investigation determined that the probable cause of the fire was likely an unknown malfunction or an electrical fault within the refrigerator or its associated electrical receptacle located in the knuckle boom crane cabin.

Immediate Operational Checks:

• Conduct immediate inspections of all refrigeration units and their electrical connections, particularly those located in operational spaces such as crane cabins, control rooms, and bridge wings.
• Verify the integrity of all electrical receptacles and wiring associated with domestic appliances throughout the vessel for any signs of wear, overheating, or damage.
